Zadia Augustus is on a mission to add some sparkle to Bermuda’s hospitality industry — with the help of a scholarship from a local business.

Since joining the Little Venice Group through the Bermuda Hospitality Institute’s “Start” programme in July 2015, the 20-year-old has gained a wealth of experience.

Her diverse responsibilities as an administrative assistant have included payroll, catering, planning cruises, waiting tables and even a taste of management duties.

“Little Venice has definitely welcomed me, and I’m very honoured to say that I work there,” the Sandys resident said.

Ms Augustus also attends Bermuda College, where she will graduate in December with an associate’s in hospitality management.

“I feel that hospitality in Bermuda needs to get back on the map. Each of one us has a role to sell the island, be it in a hotel or a restaurant,” she said.

Next year, the former Berkeley Institute student is heading to Toronto’s George Brown College for two years to further her education in hospitality.

And Little Venice will provide her with a scholarship in recognition of her hard work and talent. Emma Simmons from the Little Venice Group said the company was “proud” to offer the scholarship to Ms Augustus.

“Zadia is a bright and capable young Bermudian, ready to take on new tasks and keen to continue to improve on skills already learnt,” Ms Simmons said.

“She routinely shows initiative and sets high standards for herself, and this self-discipline is a positive path to follow for a bright and successful future. She is a great example of what our industry needs.”

After Ms Augustus completes her course in Canada, she plans on returning to Bermuda to build on her career in hospitality.

“I definitely want to come back and contribute to my community. If Little Venice still wants me, I’ll definitely work back there,” she said.

“And, in the years to come, my dream is either to be a restaurant general manager, or open and run my own restaurant.

“I find the hospitality industry very interesting — there’s never a dull a moment.”
