Some 60 model sailboats designed by local schoolchildren, America’s Cup team members, artists and businesses are going under the hammer as part of an auction to raise money for art programmes run by the Bermuda Sloop Foundation and Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art.

The Art 4 Sail fundraiser was the brainchild of Masterworks founder and director Tom Butterfield and curator Elise Outerbridge, who decided on a nautical theme.

A spokeswoman for Masterworks said: “With this upcoming year of America’s Cup, choosing sailboats as the item for auction was a perfect fit. Masterworks chose to partner with the Bermuda Sloop Foundation because we felt they were the most appropriate choice and they were thrilled to become a part of it.”

All of the models will be on display at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute until the auction on October 21. Voting for the four categories — People’s Choice, Best Primary, Middle and High School — begins on Monday.

The voting station can be found at BUEI alongside the sailboats. The auction will start at 5pm.

Bidding paddles will be sold during the cocktail hour for $50 which includes unlimited access to the bar, a limited edition 25th anniversary Masterworks book and a limited edition print of the Spirit of Bermuda. There will also be a silent auction which will offer various nautical-themed prizes that will be open for bid until 8pm.

The live auction for the sailboats will begin at 6pm in BUEI’s auditorium (only those who purchased paddles will be permitted as seating is limited.)

The winners of the four categories will be announced the night of auction, all of them receiving a $1,000 prize.

All proceeds from the event will go towards art education in both of the organisations.
