Classic humour: one of Peter Woolcock’s Christmas card originals for sale

Original works by the late political cartoonist Peter Woolcock are to go on sale in the run-up to Christmas including a folder of the artist’s favourite cartoons.

Mr Woolcock’s family have put together the last of his collection, which includes 26 years of Woppened Originals — traditionally sold before Christmas — Bermuda Sun portraits and cartoons, remaining cartoons from a Down Through The Years exhibit held in 2007, Christmas card originals, four remaining pieces from an auction held in May and even some unpublished cartoons.

A spokeswoman said of the Woppened collection: “Anyone with a politician on their Christmas list will find something for them, from David Gibbons to John Swan, David Saul, Pamela Gordon, John Barritt, Quinton Edness, Alex Scott, Paula Cox, Ewart Brown, Marc Bean, Tony Correira, John Sharpe and this list goes on and on.

“There are also cartoons on independence, music, immigration, driving and transport, Christmas, New Year and almost every major event in Bermuda for the past 30 years.”

Speaking of the remaining pieces for sale the spokeswoman said: “The detail in these pieces of art is amazing and the subtle humour is classic.” Mr Woolcock, who was a cartoonist for The Royal Gazette for more than two decades, passed away two years ago after being struck by a car.

He enjoyed an illustrious working life as a cartoonist and illustrator that spanned almost 60 years. His strips and illustrations appeared in the likes of the popular The Wind in the Willows for the Playhour comic book and Disneyland Magazine.

Anyone interested in purchasing artwork can do so by calling 236-0170, 239-9472 or by e-mailing woolcockcartoons@gmail.com to make an appointment to view the items between now and December 15.
