Tracey and Jeffrey Newenhouse first came to Bermuda for their honeymoon in August 1982.

The couple from New Jersey enjoyed their stay so much they kept returning — more than three decades later they are back to participate in the Bermuda Marathon Weekend.

“I have been wanting to do this series for at least five years and finally get to do them this year which will be our 35th anniversary in August,” Mrs Newenhouse, 55, told The Royal Gazette.

“I am an avid runner. I have run full marathons in all of the 50 states and have a total of 115. I also have run over 80 half marathons and this will be my second international event.”

Mrs Newenhouse will be participating in the Bermuda Triangle events: the KPMG Front Street Mile this evening, the Bermuda 10K tomorrow and the half-marathon on Sunday.

Her 57-year-old husband will be taking part in the 10K Walk, marking “his first race ever”.

Mrs Newenhouse, a paramedic with a background in social work, and Mr Newenhouse, a psychologist, arrive today and will be staying at the Hamilton Princess until they leave on Monday afternoon.

“I am really looking forward to some warmer weather as we recently had snow and very cold temperatures,” Mrs Newenhouse said. “I also look forward to shopping.”

The couple, who met while at Rutgers University in New Jersey, have visited the island four times.

During their first trip for their honeymoon, they stayed at the Buena Vista guesthouse, which was owned and operated by Mrs Newenhouse’s aunt, overlooking Hamilton Harbour in Paget.

“We had a very enjoyable stay there and found it conveniently located as we could take the small ferry to Hamilton or we could walk to the other side of the island to go to the beach,” she said.

“Elbow Beach was particularly beautiful. We rented scooters for two days during that week and explored both ends of the island.

“We took in most of the typical tourist sites like the Crystal Caves, aquarium and glass bottom boat.”

Mrs Newenhouse particularly enjoyed the shopping and dining in the many restaurants with outside eating areas.

In 2002, the couple, who have four children, took a cruise from New York to Bermuda to celebrate their 20th anniversary.

“We stayed a couple days out at the wharf and then another day in Hamilton. [It was] also a very enjoyable trip.”

They returned again in 2009, taking a family cruise from New York which included a stop at Bermuda on the return trip.
