Reid Street to get revamp

First Prev 1 2 Next Last
Reid Street is to get a revamp and will revisit Park(ing) Day.

Reid Street is to be given a makeover ahead of the America’s Cup including the introduction of green spaces, planters, street entertainers and outdoor seating.

Depending on feedback from the public, the work could mark the beginning of a “major upgrade”.

The City of Hamilton released a breakdown of the enhancements including the beautification of lower Reid Street between Burnaby and Queen Streets. It is part of a larger initiative to enhance the whole city of Hamilton in the run-up to the summer.

Reid Street has taken part in the global initiative Park(ing) Day when parking bays are transformed into green spaces where people can gather and relax. Reid Street will revisit Park(ing) Day in an effort to “beautify and enliven” the area while increasing foot traffic.

The City of Hamilton’s Parks Department and carpentry shop have been creating benches, picnic tables, hanging baskets and planters to be situated around the city. Ebony and mahogany trees damaged during hurricanes have been felled and will be used to create works of art while the Garden Club of Bermuda has been assisting with the planters.

The City of Hamilton said in a statement: “By May 1, the new look should be complete. This initiative is not intended to be temporary but it is experimental. The city asks for feedback from the public. We want to address any comments, concerns and questions and of course applaud the improvements. This is the first phase of what could be a major upgrade to lower Reid Street. We intend to beautify and increase the safety level in this area but we need the input from teh public especially stakeholders, so that we can work together to be a vibrant city.”

Emails can be sent to info@cityhall.bm or call 292-1234 to offer feedback.
