Eco boat crew tackle ocean pollution

Catamaran: the Race for Water vessel is powered by the sun and hydrogen harvested from the ocean

The public will get one more chance to learn about “the mission, journey and achievements” of the Race for Water Odyssey, thanks to a presentation by crew tomorrow evening.

First mate Annabelle Boudinot, along with others working on the entirely energy-efficient vessel, will hear about what it is like to sail around the world powered only by the sun and hydrogen harvested from the ocean.

They will also reveal the scientific results gleaned during their visit to Bermuda before they head out on the next leg of their journey. Their aim is to conduct scientific studies in support of ocean conservation, to raise awareness and promote new ways to fight plastic pollutions and to promote “clean tech” solutions.

The Race for Water catamaran has had a busy schedule since it came to the island in mid-May, with its crew giving presentations on energy conservation while inviting the public on board to explore the ship.

Ms Boudinot said: “Unfortunately, it is hard for us to have everybody on board who wanted to see the boat inside. We did welcome 150 students on board already. We will talk about our waste-to-energy programme, which is our solution to fight plastic pollution.

“I will also be able to discuss the scientific report concerning plastic gyres that was issued a few weeks ago — we will be very proud to present the results concerning Bermuda.”

The lecture takes place at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute tomorrow at 7.30pm.
