A popular police officer has been remembered for her courage and commitment to the community she served in the face of a life-threatening illness.

PC Latasha Gibson, 43, who was affectionately known as Tasha, passed away during the early morning hours of Monday.

Colleagues paid tribute to the mother of three, who started her career with the Bermuda Police Service in March 2005, as a “respectful, friendly and mature officer who was always willing to assist and encouraged teamwork among her peers”.

“Because of her warm nature and cheerful personality, Tasha quickly became a well-loved and respected member of the Bermuda Police family, especially in the Western Division where she spent most of her career,” a spokesman for the BPS said.

Ms Gibson stepped down from her position in the police in June 2008, but returned just over a year later due to her “love for the job and her willingness to serve the community”.

The spokesman added: “Several years ago Tasha was diagnosed with a life-threatening illness.

“Despite her battle with this illness, Tasha put on a brave face and continued to serve her community as best she could, even if this meant she would attend work for just a few hours a day at Somerset Police Station to perform clerical duties.

“As a testament to her good-natured character, when fellow colleagues learnt Tasha would have to travel abroad for medical treatment, her BPS family did not hesitate to show their support by putting on

several potluck fundraisers to assist with overseas medical expenses.

“When Tasha applied to join the BPS, she believed that becoming a police officer would be a great accomplishment for her. She also loved the idea of dealing with people and the different situations that arose.

“These were challenges that she felt would make her a stronger and wiser individual.

“She wanted to make a difference by becoming a role model for children and help to protect them from danger.”
