The ThinkFest series is set to continue next weekend with a discussion about the fight against cancer led by Bermudian biochemist Carika Weldon.

Dr Weldon, a Warwick Academy alumni, is deeply involved in cancer research and has presented at conferences around the world.

Explaining her work, she said: “To find better treatments you need to look for specific targets that are only found in cancers and not normal cells.

“By looking at how RNA is processed into proteins, we can find new specific cancer targets that can give us better cancer treatments. My work focuses on this and I will discuss the methods, results and potential for future research.”

A biomedical science lecturer at De Montfort University in Leicester, Dr Weldon founded The Bermuda Principles Foundation and organised an international conference on the island in February to discuss splicing.

She will be joined in the interactive presentation by Kameron Young, 15, a first year IB student at the Bermuda High School, which will be hosting the September 17 presentation.

Ayo Johnson, founder of ThinkMedia which is producing ThinkFest, said involving young people at all levels is one of the critical success measures of the series.

“We always have young people involved — as interns and assistants behind the scenes — so we’re pleased that Kameron has agreed to cohost the fourth ThinkFest event,” he said. “Now we’re focused on making sure that the audience is cross generational.”

In an effort to encourage more young Bermudians to take part, ThinkMedia has reserved 25 half-price tickets for Bermuda residents under the age of 24.

Dr Weldon’s presentation will be preceded at 4.30pm by a drinks sampler from African Kitchen, a new pop up restaurant concept. The main presentation begins immediately after at 5pm.
