A 19-year-old Bermudian woman is to spend the summer at the heart of the British monarchy.

Jahdia Spencer has been selected for a summer job at Buckingham Palace in The Royal Collection of art, one of the most important in the world. Ms Spencer admitted she was stunned when she got a confirmation of the job from the Palace.

She said: “I had to read it three times. I was actually shocked. In the interview process with the groups, I was the youngest one there.”

Ms Spencer said the recruitment process included an online application and questionnaire, followed by an interview by telephone.

She also had to undergo an in-person assessment, which included group and individual tests.

Ms Spencer said she applied for a ticket sales position but the selection team were so impressed they offered her a better post.

She added: “They said because my presentation was good that they wanted me to actually conduct tours.

“They said they want me to be on the front line. It’s more work because I have to remember more, but it is a better position. I’ll be able to exercise my brain properly.”

Ms Spencer, a first-year politics, philosophy and economics student at the University of Essex, added it was the second time she had applied for a summer job at the Palace.

Ms Spencer said: “I actually didn’t get it because I was coming back to Bermuda for summertime.

“They said I needed to be there for the whole summer, so I said I’ll try again when I’m fully committed.”

Ms Spencer said she looked forward to the chance to “set a good example”.

She explained: “It’s showing other people in Bermuda that you can come out to England and you can work in Buckingham Palace. You can do whatever you want.”

Ms Spencer said the job will run from July 2 to October 1 and she will get two weeks’ training before she starts.

The post was advertised through the Royal Collection Trust, which is responsible for the care of Royal artworks.

As well as the addition of a royal touch to her CV, Ms Spencer said she hoped the job might help her choose a career.

She said: “I’m doing three different subjects — I want to know if I want to go into politics, if I want to go into economics, or if I want to do the philosophy side.

“I just want to figure out what I really want to do.”

Ms Spencer said she was also keen to show people she met on the job what Bermudians were capable of.

She added: “When I go there, I also represent Bermuda.

“That’s the first thing they hear — my accent.

“They want to know where I’m from. I want to make sure I’m representing Bermuda well.”

Ms Spencer said that she was also looking forward to a perk of the job — free lunches from the Palace kitchen.

She added: “When they said free lunch, I said I would love to eat from the same kitchen that the Queen eats from.”
