Bermudian performer Nasya Joell is to tour the world — and give back — through Up With People.

Nasya, 17, has been selected as a cast member for the performance art and public service group’s touring production.

He is looking forward to visiting Europe and entertaining audiences but was also excited about the chance able to help the less fortunate.

He said: “Up With People is just the perfect mix for me. I’m able to perform, which I love, and help others, which I love.

“I’m also looking forward to the travelling. I love experiencing other cultures, and one of the great things about UWP is you stay in people’s homes.

“You get to experience other cultures, and you make friends around the world.”

Nasya was interested in the performing arts when he was young but did not become heavily involved in theatre until he went to school in the United States.

He said: “The school I was at was a performing arts school, so they really encouraged the theatre, dancing and choir.

“I like performing because it is an escape for me. I’m able to step out of my life and embody another person.

“It’s a different world for me. I’m able to express emotions I’m not able to otherwise.”

Nasya added: “Even when I was in Bermuda and involved in United Dance Productions, it became a way for me to communicate. It was my language.”

The youngster joined his school choir on a mission trip to the Dominican Republic two years ago, when he helped to build a school.

The experience was rewarding and stuck with him.

He said: “When I first went on a mission trip, I kept thinking that it was something I want to do more often. I enjoy giving back.”

Nasya’s mother approached him about UWP and persuaded him to audition.

Nasya said: “She was talking about it for the longest time.

“At first I wasn’t sure about it but I read up on it, and one of my cousins did it and enjoyed it.”

He was thrilled to land a part in the production and is looking forward to meeting his fellow cast members and seeing the world.

Nasya said: “I’m really looking forward to visiting different places in Europe. I’m obsessed with that continent.”

He has launched a gofundme page to help cover the costs of the experience and will also sell shirts.
