Three young people have been named as the newest crew members of the Spirit of Bermuda.

Benjamin Furqan, Waverley Moran and Edward Stovell have been named as the Bermuda Sloop Foundation’s new watch leaders.

Each will hold the position with the island charity for a two-year term. Benjamin, 20, joined the ship this summer for a tall ship event held in Philadelphia.

He described the voyage as an “amazing experience”.

Benjamin added that he “particularly enjoyed being there for the children” during the school voyage programme.

The former Bermuda College pupil plans to get his marine pilot licence in the future. Edward, 24, described his first overseas trip to Boston in 2010 as a life-changing experience.

The former Spice Valley Middle School pupil added: “I can’t get enough of sailing and the sea, and I am now pursuing a maritime career.”

Waverly was voted most spirited youngster while on her maiden voyage and later became a part of the ship’s charter crew.

The 22-year-old, a frequent volunteer with the BSF, said she hopes to provide other youths with the same experience that she enjoyed.

All three took part in the Bermuda Sloop Foundation school voyages as middle school pupils.

A representative with the BSF described the three as representatives of “the calibre of upstanding and fine youth that are on our small island”.

She said the appointment had given the youths “a sense of direction, confidence, self-belief and — most importantly — motivated them to tap into their inner qualities and strengths.

“Their sense of direction is set as they head towards fulfilling careers with great promise, personal fulfilment and future success.”
