Go to the library and make some noise!

The Bermuda College Library will be anything but quiet this weekend as it hosts an event to celebrate 25 years of the Friends of College Library.

Robert Masters, head of the library, said the registered charity was formed to help support the library and help the facility reach out to the wider community.

He said the help had helped fund improvements at the library, including the creation of the Brian Burland Centre for Research, named after the successful Bermudian author.

Mr Masters said: “Mr Burland was a prolific artist, so we have purchased a number of storage units for his artwork next door.

“We have a vault that has all of his journals, unpublished works, everything that an artist would do when they begin to write a story.

“It’s a treasure trove for anyone who would be interested in how someone creates a work of art.

“The FOCL have also supported us in redoing our foyer. When people think of a library, they think of a quiet space.

“We were trying to create a space where students could come, sit down, relax and eat. FOCL helped us with that work as well.”

He added that the library’s resources were also available to members of the public.

Mr Masters said: “We have a lot of outside members who come when they are studying for outside exams.

“When the National Library was closed, we had a good deal more public members come, but I think most people don’t realise we are open to the public, and because we have a student population we are open until 8pm during semester.”

Mr Masters said, in recognition of the charity’s anniversary, the library will host Library After Dark, which will feature food, drink and live music from Devils Isles Audio on Saturday.

Shelly Riley, the administrative assistant at the library, said: “It’s going to be a fabulous evening. It’s going to be an illuminating evening featuring one of Bermuda’s top bands.

“It will be an evening for the grown and the classy — we are hoping to attract a more mature group of people.

“When people come they can have a good time, they can dance. It’s going to be an exciting event.”

Admission will cost $25 and tickets are available at the Bermuda Book Store, ptix.bm and the college library.

VIP tickets, which include access to a VIP lounge, cocktail hour and a complimentary drink are also available.

Doors open at 8pm, and the music will start at 9pm.
