Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. (SG?) was founded on November 12, 1922, at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana by seven young educators. It was incorporated within the state of Indiana in December 1922 and became a national collegiate sorority on December 30, 1929, when a charter was granted to the Alpha chapter.The sorority is a non-profit whose aim is to enhance the quality of life within the community. Public service, leadership development and the education of youth are the hallmark of the organization’s programs and activities.Founded in the midst of segregation, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. is the only sorority of the four historically African-American sororities which comprise the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) established at a predominantly white campus.Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. has over 100,000 members with more than 500 undergraduate and alumnae chapters throughout the United States, Bermuda, The Bahamas, Canada, The U.S. Virgin Islands, Germany, Korea and Dubai. Women may join through undergraduate chapters at a college or university, or through an alumnae chapter after earning a college degree.Gamma Sigma Sigma Alumnae Chapter was chartered in Bermuda in April 1974 (thus making Sigma Gamma Rho an International Sorority) with a small group of women who recognized the need for a Sigma presence in Bermuda. The charter members were: Grace Bean, Judith Ingham, Yvonne Pearson, Carol Stoneham, The Late Iris Davis, The Late Rosalie Harvey and The Late Iona Richardson. Chapter members have maintained the goals of Sigma by participating in activities that promote and prepare youth for the future.“Greater Service, Greater Progress” is the sorority’s slogan which reflects its commitment to service. Through active participation and networking with other organizations, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. continues its tradition of service to improve the quality of life in every community. Gamma Sigma Sigma Alumnae Chapter’s community service consists of visitation of Lorraine’s Seniors Rest Home, Salvation Army’s Soup Kitchen, The Berkeley Institute “Pathways to Your Future” Workshops, volunteering for other charitable organizations and our newest venture the adoption of Elliott School.
