A budding photographer is entertaining offers to buy his snapshot of a sea turtle after it earned him two awards at a youth photography competition.Marcus DaCosta, 15, was named Best in Show at the first Dr Reg Grundy Annual Youth Photography Competition in early December. He also placed first in his age bracket for Bermuda Wildlife/Nature category.Marcus said that his photograph received a lot of positive feedback, with some observers even offering to purchase a copy. The Mount Saint Agnes Academy pupil added: “I might sell it to them, but I’m not sure. It’s just a thought.”Marcus, from Warwick, said that he took up photography about three years ago as part of an art project. He added that it became an infrequent hobby for him that he took up once more for the competition.Marcus said that he enjoyed photographing the wildlife and architecture of Bermuda because of its uniqueness. He explained: “In Bermuda we have really bright colours on our buildings.“Some of the animals like skinks or turtles you can only find in Bermuda.”Marcus added: “I think photography is a great way to express yourself.“A lot of people don’t try to get into photography because they don’t have good equipment.“But I take my pictures with my phone and a lot of people have those, so I think if someone wants to get into it then using your phone is a good place to start.”Marcus applied to the Reg Grundy photography competition as part of a class project, and took the snapshot of the sea turtle at the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo during a class trip.He said: “It was something that no one else in my class had taken a picture of and I just thought it looked good.“So I leant in with my phone, tried to get as close to his face as I could and I just took the picture.”The competition, held at the National Museum of Bermuda in the Royal Naval Dockyard, featured three age categories: 7 to 10, 11 to 14, and 15 to 18.Photographs were also submitted into the categories of Bermuda Life, Bermuda Architecture and Bermuda Wildlife/Nature.Marcus explained that he submitted three photographs, including his untitled turtle photograph, into each category. He added that the picture won him a Clarien bank account with $500 as well as a Canon EOS Rebel T7 camera and a tripod.Lisa Stevens, a communications technology teacher at MSA and Marcus’s photography instructor, said that the competition helped to build her pupil’s confidence. She added: “Sometimes students just think ‘it’s just a picture, it’s nothing grand’, but they don’t understand that there are other people who are potentially interested.”Marcus’s work and the work of the other finalists will be on display at Commissioner’s House, in Dockyard, for the next six months.
