The kindness shown to the last fatality of the War of 1812 between Britain and America was marked by in annual event in the East End yesterday. The ceremony paid tribute to US Navy Midshipman Richard Dale, who died in 1815, aged 20, after he was wounded in action against the Royal Navy. He was brought to Bermuda as a prisoner and cared for by the people of St George, but died of his injuries and was buried in St Peter’s churchyard. The ceremony to honour his memory was started in 1932, but stopped when the US Naval Air Station closed in 1995. But it was brought back in 2006. John Rankin, the Governor, and Constance Dierman, the US Consul General, took part in the event. Mr Rankin laid a wreath given by Louise Reider on behalf of the Dale family. Captain John Rodgaard, a retired US Navy officer, and Judy Rodgaard also laid wreaths.
