Behold the beauty that is the turquoise ocean
My dear readers, do you really love the mighty ocean that surrounds us on every side?
Do you take time and allow yourself to appreciate the moment the sun blazes forth from the shining sea? No power on earth can reverse that passage to the far side of our exquisite blue planet as it wheels through a universe of glistening stars and streaming comets!
Do you ever sit alone on one of Bermuda’s ancient limestone cliffs and consider underneath you are fossils from a wild and savage age when fierce and toothy leviathans hunted the waters of these volcanic shores?
Have you ever pictured Bermuda rising out of the boiling sea, its first instant as molten rock piercing the silver veil between water and sky?
Lulled by the mermaids of my imagination, my mind drifts to an inescapable conclusion, a lovely insight that beckons me beyond my high walls of reason: life is a mystery!
It is a splendid unknowable mystery that we travel through, guided by our thoughts and ideas and conclusions about a world we actually know little about. How exciting!
We are on a journey both together and alone, and we comfort and love each other in the face of this awesome, splendid vastness.
We will never ever figure it out. It unfolds for us in all its surprises of wonder and chance and heartbreak and joy and beauty, beauty everywhere we turn. It’s there if we just stop our hurried impulse to do! do! do! and take a moment to see! see! see!
The mystery is always there, unravelling like a big ball of yarn as we tug on one end, hoping to reveal the secret inside.
And the universe plays with us, just as a kitten plays with that ball of yarn. It bats us across the room sometimes; it holds us in its sharp jaws and growls with delight. It ruffles us with its soft paws, and it licks us with innocent pleasure.
Do you ever listen to the waves? Have you heard their songs of longing mixed with the distant voices of lost sailors, and the murmuring calls of nymphs who haunt the far breakers? Do you stop and watch the brilliant mosaic of parrot fish as their tails break the surface and wave to you during their eternal coral feasting?
Bermuda lies in the midst of a splendid turquoise dream, supported by a vast blue mantle of depths never seen, inhabited by creatures rarely glimpsed.
This dream is alive in every way. It is a blend of living plankton and zooplankton and phytoplankton and the tiniest of glittering fish racing beneath windblown men o’ war chased by the silver arrows of predators on their never-ending glide through the silky, clear infinity of deep waters.
I love the sea! I love this wild empire ruled by Poseidon, this restless world that births both raging storms and perfect stillness. I love the mystery of this marvellous world.
Stop and sit and gaze at this Bermuda ocean, most lovely on the planet. Open your heart to its secrets. It will speak to you and fill your soul with wonder.
