It’s there if we just stop our hurried impulse to do! do! do! and take a moment to see! see! see! The mystery is always there, unravelling like a big ball of yarn as we tug on one end, hoping to reveal the secret inside.And the universe plays with us, just as a kitten plays with that ball of yarn. It bats us across the room sometimes; it holds us in its sharp jaws and growls with delight. It ruffles us with its soft paws, and it licks us with innocent pleasure.Do you ever listen to the waves? Have you heard their songs of longing mixed with the distant voices of lost sailors, and the murmuring calls of nymphs who haunt the far breakers? Do you stop and watch the brilliant mosaic of parrot fish as their tails break the surface and wave to you during their eternal coral feasting?Bermuda lies in the midst of a splendid turquoise dream, supported by a vast blue mantle of depths never seen, inhabited by creatures rarely glimpsed.This dream is alive in every way. It is a blend of living plankton and zooplankton and phytoplankton and the tiniest of glittering fish racing beneath windblown men o’ war chased by the silver arrows of predators on their never-ending glide through the silky, clear infinity of deep waters.I love the sea! I love this wild empire ruled by Poseidon, this restless world that births both raging storms and perfect stillness.
