Super Stock National Championship leaders Steven Bridges and David Selley produced a stunning comeback to secure their fourth win of the season in the Roar Offshore Race in Fort Myers Beach, Florida on Sunday.

Starting last in seventeenth place after being penalised for missing a buoy in the heat race the previous day, the pair worked their way to the front of the fleet in their 32ft twin engine catamaran, Team Bermuda, to take the coveted chequered flag in the championship race.

They completed the 11-lap race in 35min 08sec, with a fastest lap time of 3:02, and the victory exceeded the expectations of many, among them throttle man and boat owner Bridges.

“It was an amazing race today and we definitely didn’t expect a podium finish, but we put ourselves in a good position, stayed patient and just kept picking our way through the field,” he told The Royal Gazette.

“It was a tough one and to come away at the top of the podium feels incredible. So proud of the effort from start to finish. Can’t thank our team enough. They help us every race and we couldn’t do it without them. Family, friends and sponsors keep us pushing.”

Driver Selley was equally thrilled to come away victorious under trying circumstances.

“There was a lot of grit, determination and teamwork that went into today’s race,” he said. “To turn a mishap into a positive result makes it even more rewarding. A huge thank you to the whole team for working so hard this weekend.”

The result leaves Bridges and Selley in top spot in the championship standings with two races remaining in the season.

The pair began Saturday’s heat race on pole after posting the fastest times in the two qualifying heats but suffered a setback after receiving a one-lap penalty for missing the buoy, which dropped them to last spot on the starting grid for the main event the following day.

Team Bermuda have been the most consistent team on the circuit so far this season having also won the St Petersburg Grand Prix, Thunder at Cocoa Beach and St Clair River Classic, and finished second at the New Orleans Grand Prix and Shootout Offshore on Lake of Ozarks.

American rivals Team Allen finished 8.9sec behind the winners to take second followed by Wozencraft in third with a time of 35:20

Also flying the island’s banner in the Roar Offshore Race was Luis Martins and Nick Imprescia, who finished eighth in their boat, Nuff Said, after crossing the line in 36 min 34sec.

The pair also finished in second in Saturday’s heat race to determine starting positions for Sunday’s championship race.

Driver Martins and throttle man Nick Imprescia are also holding their own in the championship having picked up their first win together at the Lake of Ozarks Shootout in Missouri in June. They have also finished in the top six in all but one race this year.
