Wayne Caines, a former senator and CEO of Digicel, last night emerged victorious in his old neighbourhood of Devonshire North West — despite a three-way contest for Constituency 14 that many thought would have hamstrung his campaign.

With the One Bermuda Alliance incumbent Glen Smith, known for canvassing the area over the past five years, and former premier Paula Cox returning from her 2012 loss as an independent contender, it might have appeared that the Progressive Labour Party candidate stood little chance.

Instead, the self-described champion of the underdog came through with 57 per cent of the vote — embracing his elated family outside the polling station last night at CedarBridge Academy.

Maxanne Caines II, his daughter and campaign manager, anxiously watched the count through the night while Ms Cox and Mr Smith observed the count inside.

Surrounded by supporters, an emotional Mr Caines spoke of his determination to buckle down to work on behalf of his constituents — beginning this morning.

A host of issues wait to be tackled, as the new MP noted in the run-up to last night’s win: crime, lack of jobs and a sense among many that they had been “frozen out” of opportunities.

Parochial issues include tainted water in Cedar Park, and sewerage odours around ageing housing near areas such as Devon Lane.

In particular, Mr Caines stressed the need to empower residents of Devonshire North West, telling this newspaper that he wanted to “infuse this community” with a sense of self reliance. He spoke of helping young men to attain GEDs through mentorship and inspiring residents to “not only to be part of the solution, but to put the building blocks in place”.

Ms Cox, who initially had been optimistic at her chances in her former seat, said: “Clearly a two-party race and I had no impact as the Independent candidate.

“The voters wanted to send a strong message to the government that was anti OBA and this they did. I wish the new PLP MP for C14 all the best as he had a decisive win and should be commended.”

Mr Smith was accepting of defeat, telling The Royal Gazette that he would take the occasion to return to his business interests.

Asked about his political future, Mr Smith said: “Let’s just get through tonight.”
