A review into the controversial airport redevelopment contract has been completed, the Minister of Transport and Regulatory Affairs said last night.

But a report based on it has yet to be finished.

Walter Roban said: “The Government will advise the public of any important developments at the appropriate time.”

He added: “The review that was begun by the Government after being elected to office in July 2017 and reported in the media has been completed but there is more to be done.”

The Government would not answer questions from The Royal Gazette about the cost of the review.

Mr Roban said: “We are happy with the work already under way by the Bermuda Airport Authority to protect the present and future interests of all Bermudians with regard to the operations and redevelopment of the airport.”

He added: “The authority’s initial work on the review was concluded at the end of the year in accordance with our commitment and the final report is nearing completion now.”

The Progressive Labour Party, then in Opposition, blasted the public-private partnership deal with the Canadian Commercial Corporation and its contractor Aecon after it was signed by the One Bermuda Alliance government.

Last August, David Burt, the Premier, said the deal was a “decision to privatise” the airport.

The Bermuda Airport Authority and LeighFisher, an American-based global consultancy firm, were asked to carry out the review after the PLP landslide General Election victory in July.

The independent Blue Ribbon Panel, set up by the OBA early last year, found that the deal was “commercially sound and reasonable”.

The panel added the contract was “likely to meet” the previous government’s objectives of long-term sustainability, increased traffic volume and more revenue.

But the panel said that “clearer disclosure of the transaction” would have benefited the project.
