Insurance interns speak about experiences

Summer learning: the BFIS group of interns who gave presentations about their experiences in the insurance markets of Atlanta, Bermuda, Chicago and London (Photograph supplied)

Interns at the Bermuda Foundation for Insurance Studies have given presentations on what they learnt during immersion in the insurance markets of Atlanta, Bermuda, Chicago and London this summer.

The presentations were given to 50 insurance professionals, former interns and BFIS scholars.

Cathy Lapsley, BFIS executive director, thanked everyone involved and said that a combined total of 53 companies in Bermuda and overseas had hosted the students, with staff giving time to meet the students for a morning, lunch or the entire day and sometimes after work.

This year, five of the companies had offices in all four locations where they hosted the students.

Allied World was the lead sponsor were for the Bermuda intern programme, and XL Catlin was the lead sponsor for the Atlanta, Chicago and London programmes. KPMG sponsored the final presentation lunch.

Some 145 Bermudian students have now taken part in the programmes during the past 16 years.

The Bermuda programme started in 2001, expanding to Chicago in 2006, London in 2008 and Atlanta in 2012.

The intern programmes are short but intensive, giving university students the opportunity to learn what the insurance industry is all about and the career that suits their goals.

Each applicant chooses the jurisdiction they would like to go to and BFIS endeavours to accommodate them. The programme is open to undergraduates usually in their junior or senior years.

Ms Lapsley thanked the following companies and organisations for their support: Abir, AIG, Allied World Assurance, Alston & Bird, AmWINS, Aon/Aon Benfield, Appleby, Arch Insurance Group, Argo Re, Ascot, Axis, Bermuda Business Development Agency, Bermuda Stock Exchange, Bermuda Monetary Authority, BFIS London Alumni Group, Chubb/Chubb Tempest Re, Clyde & Co, Coca-Cola Company, Colonial Group International, Condie Risk Consultancy, Cunningham Lindsey (MCL Global), Fidelis, Genesee Special Brokerage, Hamilton Group, Hannover Re, Hiscox, Ironshore, Jefferies Investment Bank, Lancashire, Lloyd’s of London, Lockton Companies, Marsh, Markel Corporation, McGriff Siebels & Williams, MS Amlin, Merlinos, OIL Casualty Insurance/OIL Group, Registrar of Companies, Renaissance Re, RPS Atlanta, RT Speciality, Southern Company, Strategic Risk Solutions, Sun Life, Swiss Re, Thomas Miller, Tokio Millennium/Tokio Marine Kiln, Travelers, Validus Group, Wells Fargo, Willis Towers Watson, XL Catlin and Zurich.
