Duffy among favourites in Cape Town

Chasing a podium finish: Flora Duffy

Flora Duffy will have home advantage this weekend as the World Triathlon Series moves to Cape Town.

The Bermuda triathlete, who is based in Stellenbosch, will be part of a strong women’s field in the South Africa event.

Alongside Duffy, ranked second in the world, are Britain’s Helen Jenkins, who won last time out on the Gold Coast, and her compatriot Jodie Simpson, who won the race two years ago.

Still, Duffy is among the favourites to finish on the podium in a field that also includes last year’s second, third and fourth-placed Cape Town finishers: Katie Zaferes, of the United States, Switzerland’s Nicola Spirig and Germany’s Sophia Saller.

The men’s race has an equally stellar cast, with the world-series leader and Olympic Games hopefuls all making their way to to Cape Town.

Richard Murray, of South Africa, described the field as “the best you can get.”

He said: “We will get to see all the world’s best athletes race together and this will make for some amazing watching.”

Spaniard Mario Mola, the world-series leader, will be joined by the likes of Jonathan Brownlee, of Britain, and Frenchman Vincent Luis.

All of the athletes who can complete a 5-kilometres run in less than 14min 30sec and will be “ones to watch”, according to Murray.

Besides Mola, Luis and the Brownlee brothers, also competing will Spaniard Fernando Alarza, who is second in the 2016 rankings, and Crisanto Grajales, from Mexico, who is fifth.

“It’s going to be fascinating seeing these athletes in an Olympic year when they are all striving to be at their best,” Gary Marescia, the race director, said.

“Besides attracting a field of this standard, the event will provide an opportunity to showcase Cape Town to the world.”

The elite women’s race begins at 9am Bermuda time on Sunday, with the men’s race scheduled to start at 11.25am.
