Top-ranked Duffy hopes to increase her lead

Leader of the pack: Duffy is top of the ITU World Triathlon Series rankings with two races left

Flora Duffy will look to solidify her position at the top of the ITU World Triathlon Series rankings when she competes in Edmonton, Alberta, on Sunday.

With two races of the series remaining, Duffy, who has 3,491 points, leads Jodie Stimpson, of Britain, in second on 3,146, and Jorgensen, the two-times defending champion, in third on 3025. Ai Ueda, of Japan, is fourth with 2,736.

There are 800 points available for finishing first in a WTS race, 740 for second, 685 for third and 633 for coming fourth.

The series culminates with the Grand Final Cozumel in Mexico on September 17 with double points awarded for the race.

It will be Duffy’s first race since her slightly disappointing eighth-place finish at the Olympic Games in Rio.

She had been among the medal contenders having won her previous two races: the ITU World Triathlon Series in Stockholm and World Cup in Montreal.

Last year’s Edmonton race was held in cold temperatures and driving rain, conditions Duffy seemed to relish as she finished second, just nine seconds behind Britain’s Vicky Holland, the bronze medal-winner in Rio.

“Fingers crossed it is cold, rainy and windy this weekend ... those conditions suit me better than the other two,” Duffy said.

Also competing in Edmonton this weekend will be teenagers Tyler Smith and Erica Hawley, the top two up-and-coming Bermudian triathletes.

Smith, 19, has spent the past few weeks training in Victoria, British Columbia, with his coach Kelly Guest preparing for his final race in the Canadian Junior Elite Series ahead of the 16-19 Junior Elite World Championships in Cozumel.

Smith will be hoping for a top-five finish after his impressive fourth-place in this month’s Quebec Provincial Championships, an event turned into a duathlon because of the poor water conditions.

Hawley, 18, has started as a freshman at Boulder University in Colorado and will also make the trip to Edmonton to compete in the women’s Canadian Junior Elite Series.

After an impressive season in which she has posted several top-ten finishes, Hawley will strive for another solid race ahead of the Junior Elite World Championships.

Duffy competes on Sunday at 3pm Bermuda time, while Smith and Hawley race the previous day.

Hawley’s race starts at 4pm, with Smith’s at 6pm.
