O'Shea leads the way in New York

Local favourite: Biwot finishd fifth at the New York Marathon

A group of 20 runners from Bermuda competed in the New York City Marathon, with James O' Shea leading them home in 2hr 54min 15sec. O'Shea, who runs for London-based Serpentine Running Club, ran a level-paced race, going through the halfway point in 1:26:43.Next Bermuda runner to finish was Manuel Lopes in 3:18:17.

He was followed closely by Geoff Blee, who stopped the clock at 3:19:57.

Among the women, Kristen Palmer was the fastest from the island in 3:25:07, while Laura Wright, who was seeking a qualifying time for the Boston Marathon, achieved that with eight minutes to spare as she clocked 3:27:32. Finishing close behind was Alison Schindel in 3:29:27.

There were about 50,000 finishers. The overall winner was Ghirmay Ghebresalassie, of Eritrea, in 2:07.51, while Mary Keitany, of Kenya, won the women’s race in 2:24.26.

Fifth-place in the men’s race went to Shadrack Biwot, a name familiar to many Bermuda residents. The Kenyan, who now competes for the US, competed in the Bermuda Marathon Weekend in 2010, 2011 and 2013. He won a total of six titles, including a remarkable triple in 2010 when he ran to victory in the Front Street Mile, 10K and half-marathon.

Biwot clocked a time of 2:12:01 in the New York City Marathon.

The other Bermuda finishers were Giselle Yeung in 3:36:16, Lorna Gwilt in 3:39:13, Jose Lopez 3:45:17, David McHiugh 3:49:14, Baden Cashmore 3:53:01, Trevor Brookes 3:56:13, Lucy Ching 3:57:17, Mark Harris 3:57:22, Steve Ortiz 4:05:42, Dylan Marshall 4:09:27, Yuko Ebata 4:14:26, Andy McComb 4:33:13, Samantha Naude 5:04:52, and Marsha Burrows in 6:49:13.
