Butterfield climbs to top of the podium

On a roll: Butterfield was in superb form in Raleigh

Tyler Butterfield’s triathlon season just keeps getting better after winning the Ironman 70.3 Raleigh in North Carolina at the weekend.

Butterfield has now posted finishes of fourth in the 70.3 Dubai, third in the Ironman North American Championships in Texas and second in the 70.3 Monterrey, Mexico, before his first place in Raleigh.

The Bermudian, who is building towards the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, in October, finished in an overall time of 3hr 53min 22sec.

He emerged from the 1.2-mile swim with the leaders in a time of 25min 02sec but was unable to match the pace of Andrew Yoder, of the United States, completing the 56-mile bike in 2:06:28.

Butterfield, 34, trailed Yoder by more than three minutes after the bike but claimed the lead during the 13.1-mile run, which he finished in 1:19:22.

Yoder, who like Butterfield is a former professional cyclist, was runner-up in 3:55:00 while Jackson Laundry, of Canada, came third in 3:56:06.

“Thanks guys. 4th in Jan, 3rd in April, 2nd in May, and 1st in June! That’s steady progression. Haha,” Butterfield wrote on his Twitter account.

Meanwhile, Bermuda’s top junior triathlete Tyler Smith placed third in the British Championships elite sprint-distance race at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire at the weekend.

Smith, who attends the Leeds University — where he trains with some of the UK’s top triathletes — completed the 750-metres swim in 09:33, the 19.8-kilometres bike in 28:37 and the 5.4-mile run in 18:55.

The Bermudian’s overall time was 1:00:41, with Barclay Izzard winning in 58:56 and Will Cruddington coming second in 1:00:05.
