Tyler Smith has secured a berth at the ITU Elite Triathlon World Championships in Rotterdam in September.

Smith placed tenth at the Magog Camtri Junior American Championships in Quebec at the weekend, finishing in an overall time of 58min 24sec.

He was sixteenth after the 750-metres swim after exiting the water in 09:29 before posting the second-quickest time in the 20-kilometres bike in 31:41.

Smith was also the sixteenth fastest in the run, completing the 5km course in 16:12. The race was won by Darr Smith, of the United States, who finished with an overall time of 57:36.

Bermudian Erica Hawley withdrew from the women’s race having been hit by car on a roundabout last week in Banyoles, Catalonia, Spain, where she was preparing for Magog.

Hawley suffered road rash and severe bruising while her bike was broken into two pieces.

The 19-year-old is now waiting to find out whether her application for a wild card for the World Championships has been successful. Smith and Hawley both found the hot and humid conditions challenging at last year’s World Championships in Cozumel, Mexico. Smith, 18, came 43rd in the junior men’s race, while Hawley placed 46th in the junior women’s race.

Meanwhile, Karen Smith, Tyler’s mother, finished sixth in the women’s 45-49 age group in Magog. The event attracted a strong field as it was a qualifier for the ITU Long Distance World Championships in Penticton, Canada, next month.
