Wagner hails goal hero Wells

Back in the goals: Wells scored his seventeenth goal of the season

Nahki Wells scored his seventeenth goal of the season for Huddersfield Town on Saturday while Reggie Lambe helped Mansfield Town beat Notts County.

Wells finally moved off 16 goals when he netted in the first half as Huddersfield won 2-0 at Blackburn Rovers in the Sky Bet Championship.

Lambe struck his team’s fourth goal in the second half in an impressive 5-0 win over Notts County at home in League Two.

David Wagner, the Huddersfield head coach, was quick to praise the all-round contribution of Wells after the forward’s 35th-minute strike at Ewood Park.

The Bermuda striker profited from a defensive mistake from Shane Duffy, whose header left the 25-year-old with a simple volley to beat Jason Steele, the Rovers goalkeeper.

Wells then pressured Matt Kilgallon in the 54th minute which led to the defender putting the ball through his own net, as Huddersfield registered a win at Ewood Park for the first time since 1986.

And after watching Town bag their second victory in three games on the road to end a three-game winless run, Wagner said Wells deserved the goal after a performance that summed up the way Huddersfield play.

“Of course the first goal was a mistake, but Wells showed a good nose that he smelled something could happen and he was there, so all in all I think it was a good performance,” Wagner said.

“I’m very proud, happy and satisfied with what we showed today and the result. I think we deserved it. As important that he scores again today, is that, like in the past, he’s our first defender.

“Nahki helps the team massively with his work in the defence and the team try to help Nahki get chances and score. He did well today but not only because of his goal, but because of his defence performance.

“It is part of our identity that after we lose the ball, we try and get it back as soon as we can. I think in this situation [the first goal] we made a bad decision from Harry Bunn. I think it would have been better to shoot but he made a decision to pass.

“Blackburn got the ball, then thought maybe they were without pressure but Nahki did what we always try to do, we pressured the ball as high as we can near their goal. It was a mistake from our opponent but I don’t know how many teams in this situation stay as high as we stay and I think at the end, he deserved his goal.”

The win for Huddersfield lifts them to sixteenth place, 11 points above the relegation zone, while Blackburn’s season is in danger of petering out after a third consecutive defeat at home, and a fourth loss in their last five matches.

Lambe, meanwhile, helped Mansfield keep alive their hopes of a play-off spot when he converted their fourth goal in the 67th minute, as Mansfield scored four times in the second half.

The Bermuda winger finished off a good run and cross from Matty Blair when he scored into the top left corner. Matt Green opened the scoring for Mansfield in the sixth minute and added a second in the second half to take his tally for the season to 16.

Mansfield’s sixteenth win of the campaign lifts them to thirteenth in the table, six points behind the final play-off spot.

Rai Simons was an unused substitute as Chesterfield lost 3-0 at home to Sheffield United, and are now just four points above the relegation zone in League One.
