Parfitt-Williams helps West Ham to cup glory

Promising West Ham youngster Parfitt-Williams

Djair Parfitt-Williams and his West Ham United team-mates lifted the BUnder-21 Premier League Cup after their 5-3 penalty shoot-out victory away to Hull City at the KC Stadium yesterday.

West Ham held a 1-0 advantage heading into the second leg of the final and looked home and dry when Hull’s Will Annan scored in the final minute of second-half stoppage time to leave the team’s tied.

However, West Ham would not be denied their moment of glory and finally sealed the win with a flawless display from the penalty spot after 30 minutes of extra time failed to separate the teams.

Marcus Browne, Reece Oxford, Sam Byram, Stephen Hendrie and Martin Samuelsen all converted for the visiting side while Raphael Spiegel, the West Ham goalkeeper, saved Daniel Batty’s effort.

Parfitt-Williams, who came off the bench to grab a late winner in West Ham’s 1-0 home win over Hull in last week’s first leg, finished as the competition’s joint leading goal-scorer with five goals along with Hull striker Greg Olley.

“It’s great to win. At this level we usually talk about development, but tonight we really wanted to win,” Terry Westley, the West Ham Academy director, said.

“We took it right to the very end and overall I think we deserved to win. We have to credit to Hull because they more than gave us a game; they were good, hard to break down and had ability.

“Over the two games we created a lot of chances, and we really should have put the game to bed a lot sooner. To be pegged back right at the end and still come out on top is massive. We were dead on our feet out there towards the end.

“We showed great character and determination to come back and it’ll stand them in good stead for the future.”

Needing a goal to get back into the tie, Hull went straight for the jugular with Olley nearly closing Spiegel down.

West Ham countered with Lewis Page, the left back, beating his man and whipping in a cross, but Hull were able to clear their lines.

Rory Watson, the Hull goalkeeper, also beat Parfitt-Williams in a foot race to a loose ball and then saved Samuelsen’s effort as West Ham’s confidence continued to grow.

Both teams squandered chances from close range before Bermudian Parfitt-Williams, making his first start since returning from a knee injury, nearly added to his goal tally with a 42nd-minute effort that crashed against the post.

West Ham picked up where they left off after the break with Browne firing over after some fancy footwork by Page.

Parfitt-Williams’s night came to an end in the 68th minute as Westley made a double substitution to try and add some spark to his team.

Hull threatened again two minutes later with Spiegel making a brilliant save to keep out a header.

West Ham did their best to hold in the dying moments as their opponents pushed forward with Annan blasting into the top corner to send the tie into extra time.
