Reggie Lambe missed Carlisle United’s first day of pre-season training after his new club gave him extra time off to recover from playing for Bermuda in the Caribbean Cup.

Lambe, who signed for Carlisle from Sky Bet League One rivals Mansfield Town this month, has not had a summer break having captained the island in the second round of the competition.

Bermuda were eliminated from the Caribbean Cup after losing 3-0 to French Guiana in Cayenne last week to finish bottom of their group.

Keith Curle, the Carlisle manager, said it was important for Lambe to recharge his batteries after a busy summer on international duty.

“His conditioning is spot-on and he has been in good contact with [fitness coach] Lee Fearn, and he is going to come back and hit the ground running,” Curle, a former England defender, said.

“He has not had a summer break. It’s important for Reggie to come back to England, reacclimatise and readjust. He will be here on Monday [today] for his introduction to the group.”

Lambe turned down a new deal at Mansfield Town who were hoping the 25-year-old would remain at Mill Lane.

The former Ipswich Town winger, who had several clubs competing for his signature, made 73 appearances and scored ten goals for Mansfield during his two seasons at the club.

Wells’s Huddersfield Town have signed Elias Kachunga on a season-long loan from German top-flight side Ingolstad.

David Wagner, the Huddersfield head coach, said the striker will provide competition for Wells, who finished as the club’s top scorer last season with 18 goals in all competitions.

The Championship side have the option to make Kachunga’s move a permanent one at the end of next season.

Kachunga, a former German under-21 player, was Ingolstad’s record signing when he joined in 2015, but made only three starts last term.

“Sometimes you need a hard experience as a young player to make steps forward,” Wagner said.

“I’m sure with his pace, mobility and working attitude he gives another great option up front, which we needed for the upcoming season.

“It was a big target of ours in this summer window to bring in senior competition for Nahki Wells and I believe that is what Elias will give.”

Freddy Hall, the Bermuda goalkeeper, helped Limerick, the runaway SSE Aircity League First Division leaders, to a 2-0 win at Cabinteely last Friday night.

Thanks to goals from Shane Tracy and Sean McSweeney, Limerick extended their advantage to 16 points.

Meanwhile, Danté Leverock was an unused substitute in Harrisburg City Islanders 3-1 defeat at home to Charlotte Independence at the weekend.

It was the United Soccer Leagues side’s sixth straight loss, leaving them eleventh in the Eastern Conference with 13 points from 16 games.
