Chelsea next stop for talented Thompson

Blue is the colour: Thompson has been accepted into the Chelsea programme

Kenni Thompson is taking her football talents to England.

The 15-year-old has been accepted into the Chelsea Ladies programme where she will further develop her skills.

She is the daughter of Kenny Thompson, the BAA director of football and former Bermuda coach, and has been playing for Saint Gabriel in the Cadete — Juvenile Femenino Preferente Division in Barcelona, Spain, as well training with the World Sports Academy Barcelona boys’ programme in recent years.

As recently as last month the promising player helped the Catalan Under-16 girls team to the Spanish Championship title with a 2-0 win over Madrid in the final, and also played in her team’s 4-0 semi-final victory against Asturias.

Thompson has been based in Barcelona for the past four years where she also had a playing stint with the La Liga champion’s girls team.

Yesterday, Thompson’s father posted on instagram: “Kenni has been accepted into the Chelsea Ladies programme.

“On behalf of Kenni and our entire family, we would like to thank FC Barcelona for the season spent there. The Catalan Federation (FCF) for the amazing structure that enables players to play and develop to their optimal level.

“As well, we are proud that Kenni was able to represent the FCF in the U16 Spanish Championships in which Catalunya became Champions of Spain. Thank you Catalunya U16 coaches and support staff who were amazing to Kenni.

“Special thanks to WOSPAC Barcelona for your support of Kenni with your training programme which enabled Kenni to grow as a player with additional training sessions with the boys’ programme.

“Thank you UE Cornella family. Kenni’s development accelerated during the season in which she played with the Infantil boys team in 2013/2014. UE Cornella is our club because everyone has made us feel so at home there.

“Much appreciation and thanks to CE Sant Gabriel for the two seasons Kenni has spent with you.

“There are not enough words here to describe our appreciation. Coaches, coordinators and parents — everyone has been amazing to Kenni and supported her 100%.

“Finally, thank you to those special people in Bermuda that have assisted Kenni in this journey. Muchas Gracias todas!!”
