Nahki Wells and Elias Kachunga both scored for the second straight match as Huddersfield Town beat Rochdale in a behind-closed-doors friendly at John Smith’s Stadium yesterday.

Huddersfield fielded two different teams in the match, with Kachunga opening the scoring in the 20th minute before Wells, who came on when David Wagner, the head coach, introduced a new side for the final half hour, sealed the match with a 73rd-minute strike after playing a neat one-two with Philip Billing.

The visit of Sky Bet League One side Rochdale to John Smith’s Stadium followed Sunday’s 4-1 win by Huddersfield over League Two side Accrington Stanley, and provided Huddersfield’s new signings with a home match ahead of the visit of Liverpool next Wednesday.

Kachunga again caught the eye with his industrious approach, opened the scoring after showing good control and a neat finish after latching onto Rajiv van La Parra’s flicked header from goalkeeper Joel Coleman’s kick out.

The busy German striker, who is battling with Wells for a spot in the team’s attack, was thwarted by a good save soon after as he hooked the ball goalwards from a Tommy Smith cross.

He then forced the visiting goalkeeper to block with his legs before coming close with a back heel across the face of goal.

Rochdale’s threat came mostly from set-pieces, although Calvin Andrew, a former Crystal Palace striker, forced a good save from Coleman with a close-range header before Luke Coddington took over between the posts.

The Huddersfield side for the last half hour also featured Jon Gorenc Stankovic, the new Slovenian centre back, who played alongside Michael Hefele in defence.

Wagner handed another outing to 16-year-old England junior international Jordan Williams, this time at right back, after he played the final 15 minutes of last week’s 1-0 win at Guiseley as a replacement for midfielder Ivan Paurevic.
