Rai Simons, the Bermuda striker, played for Chesterfield as they lost a preseason friendly 4-3 in Hungary.

Simons, a second-half substitute, set up Kristian Dennis to score Chesterfield’s third goal late in the game as the Sky Bet League One side lost their first preseason match against Apollon Limassol on Wednesday.

Anton Maglica put the Cypriot side ahead in the sixth minute with a half volley from the edge of the area.

However, Jay O’Shea replied from the spot after a handball in the area in the ninth minute.

Three minutes later Chesterfield went ahead when Gboly Ariyibi linked well with O’Shea before crossing for Sylvan Ebanks-Blake to finish. On 24 minutes it was all square, Maglica on target again for the home team.

In a frenetic opening half-hour, the Cypriots took the lead again when Sam Hird put the ball in his own net to make it 3-2.

Danny Wilson, the Chesterfield manager, made nine changes at the break, bringing on recent addition Ryan Fulton in goal along with new boys Reece Mitchell and Kristian Dennis.

Luka Stojanovic gave Apollon a two-goal cushion with just over 20 minutes remaining, but the Spireites hit back late on when Simons set up Dennis to make it 4-3.

Chesterfield are in action tomorrow when Sheffield Wednesday visit the Proact Stadium.
