Wells a doubt for Liverpool friendly

Knee injury: Wells will miss several days of pre-season training

Nahki Wells is a doubt for Huddersfield Town’s big pre-season friendly against Liverpool at the John Smith’s Stadium tomorrow.

Wells was ruled out of Huddersfield’s 2-0 win away to Oldham Athletic at the weekend with a knee injury and is expected to miss several days of training this week.

It is not known whether it is the same injury Wells picked up at the end of last season, which prevented him from taking part in Bermuda’s Scotiabank Caribbean Cup campaign.

Huddersfield will be hoping Wells — last season’s top scorer with 18 goals — will recover in time for their opening Sky Bet Championship game of the season away to Brentford on August 6.

The 26-year-old had made a bright start to pre-season, scoring in his team’s 2-0 victory against League One side Rochdale in a behind-closed-doors friendly last week.

Huddersfield, who have won all four of their pre-season friendlies so far, will break their attendance record for a home friendly when they take on Liverpool in front of 21,000 spectators.

The previous record is 20,042 for the visit of Argentinian side Club Atlético Independiente in 1954.

The demand to attend the mouth-watering match with Jürgen Klopp’s Barclays Premier League side reflects not only the stature of the opposition but also the optimism around Huddersfield, whose head coach David Wagner has brought in 12 signings this summer.

Wagner, who is good friends with Klopp, said he was pleased with his side’s win against Oldham thanks to second-half goals from Harry Bunn and Jack Payne.

“The schedule has been demanding, but it’s necessary to get to where we need to be for the opening game against Brentford,” he told the Huddersfield Examiner.

“We scored two good goals and kept a clean sheet in a good test against a team who were physical and tried to be aggressive, and it’s important that we work against uncomfortable moments.

“The lads maintained their focus and effort right to the end, and I like that.”

Huddersfield finished nineteenth in the Championship last season.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have injury concerns of their own, with Klopp hoping that the ankle injury Joel Matip, the defender, suffered against Wigan Athletic on Sunday is not a serious one.

The German-born Cameroon international, who joined on a free transfer from Schalke 04 at the end of last season, limped off in the final stages of the 2-0 win over the Championship side.

“I hope it’s only a minor problem. It’s not too serious, hopefully,” Klopp said.

With defender Mamadou Sakho, who underwent treatment for a long-standing Achilles problem, set to miss the Premier League opener against Arsenal on August 14, Klopp is confident the 24-year-old will resume training today.

“It’s the foot he had problems with in the past and then he had a little bit of pain when pre-season started because of the intensity, Klopp said. “He said he’s had it one or two times already. He’s used to it.”

• Danté Leverock, the Bermuda defender, scored in Harrisburg City Islanders’ 2-1 win against Pittsburgh Riverhounds in the United Soccer Leagues Easter Conference at the weekend.

Leverock, who was named man of the match, scored in the first half with a header from a corner for his team’s opening goal to end his side’s nine-game losing streak.

“First goal of the season, man of the match and a win vs our rivals it was a good night,” Leverock posted on his Facebook page.
