Wells a doubt for first week of season

Still injured: Wells has yet to fully recover from a knee problem

Nahki Wells is doubtful for Huddersfield Town’s Sky Bet Championship opener against Brentford at the John Smith’s Stadium on Saturday.

Wells, the club’s leading scorer with 18 goals last season, has a knee injury and missed Huddersfield’s last two preseason friendlies at home to Liverpool and away to Werder Bremen.

David Wagner, the Huddersfield head coach, insists Wells has not at this stage been ruled out of the Brentford match but admits he is a “question mark”.

“Unfortunately he is now out for two weeks from the training group, but at the end of the day it’s only two weeks in a ten-month season. It’s nothing,” Wagner told the Huddersfield Examiner.

Wells is unlikely to feature against FC Ingolstadt in Friday’s preseason friendly in Austria.

Reggie Lambe played in Carlisle United’s 2-0 defeat away to Bradford City at the weekend.

Bradford, who play in League One — the league above Carlisle — scored two goals in the second half from Filipe Morais and James Hanson.

Goalkeeper Freddy Hall’s Limerick moved a step closer to promotion from the SSE Aircity League First Division with a 2-0 win at home to Shelbourne on Friday.

Shane Duggan, the Limerick captain, opened the scoring with a strike from the edge of the area to give his side a half-time lead.

Chris Mulhall added a second after the break to keep Limerick’s 20-point lead at the top of the table.

Danté Leverock’s Harrisburg City Islanders drew 1-1 away to Rochester Rhinos in the United Soccer Leagues Eastern Conference on Friday.

Substitute Sean Totsch opened the scoring for Rochester before Brett Jankoukas equalised for Harrisburg.
