Wagner has no plans to sell Wells

Waiting game: Wagner would like the transfer window to close without any offers for his players coming in

Next Wednesday’s transfer deadline day cannot come fast enough for David Wagner, who is desperate to hang on to striker Nahki Wells.

Wagner, the Huddersfield Town head coach, has brought 13 players to the club since the end of last season to boost his first team squad to 25. However, it is the reported interest from other clubs for his star players, including Wells, that is making Wagner anxious ahead of next week’s deadline.

The manager admits he is ready to “react” if Town receive any impossible-to-refuse offers for his top players ahead of the 11pm deadline on August 31. He said he does not expect that to be the case, with the only exception being Kyle Dempsey, the midfielder, for whom there has been some interest.

Wagner insists he will not make a final decision on any loan until after his Sky Bet Championship leaders have played Wolverhampton Wanderers at the John Smith’s Stadium on Saturday.

“There has been interest in Kyle, and I have said he can talk to other clubs,” Wagner told the Huddersfield Examiner. “But I won’t make a final decision on whether he can go out until after the Wolves match.

“Otherwise I don’t expect anything to happen, and it is not in my plans for anything to happen.”

Huddersfield are enjoying a good start to the season, with three wins and a draw from their four matches.

However, the Huddersfield coach has warned that Wolves will be “strong competitors” on Saturday, as Wagner’s side look to take their tally to 13 points with another home win.

Huddersfield are two places and two points ahead of Wolves, who are also unbeaten in the league.

“Just like Barnsley, it will be another tough game,” Wagner said.

“And just like Barnsley, we hope another big crowd will give us great support and play their part. Wolves are a strong side, confident and good in the transition game.

“They are able to handle the ball well and they work very hard. We must make the details of our game right to beat them, and we have every reason to be confident and trust in ourselves.”

Wells, still returning to full fitness following a knee injury, played 76 minutes against Barnsley before being substituted. This week he dismissed transfer talk as “typical speculation”, saying he is happy at Huddersfield.
