I’m here for the season, says Wells

Staying put: Huddersfield striker Wells

Nahki Wells said he is committed to Sky Bet Championship side Huddersfield Town for the rest of the season.

The 26-year-old has reassured Huddersfield supporters not to worry about him leaving during the January transfer window.

The Bermudian striker had been linked with several Championships clubs during the recent transfer window, including Aston Villa, Norwich City, Derby County and Newcastle United.

“You are always going to get talk, that’s just football,” Wells told The Huddersfield Examiner.

“Hopefully you get an idea of how serious it is, and it’s never been enough to sway my head.”

Huddersfield have made a blistering start to the season under David Wagner, the team’s head coach, with 13 points from five games and were keen to keep hold of Wells who has scored one goal in four games this season.

Wells, the club’s top scorer for the past two seasons with 14 goals in 2014/15 and 18 last term, has netted just once this season as he recovers from a knee injury.

“Now I want to focus on getting better and helping the team carry on the way we have started,” said Wells, who joined Huddersfield for £1.3 million in January 2014 and is under contract until 2018.

“I’m not even Town’s number one striker at the moment. Elias [Kachunga] has the shirt. I have to focus on working as hard as I can to get it back.

“I’m here for the season, that’s for sure, and I’m happy with that. I want to do better than last season and be a part of what possibly could be something great here.”

Wagner said after the transfer window closed: “It is no surprise to have speculation over a good player, which [Wells] is, but we have had no phone call or e-mail from another club.

“Every transfer window there will be speculation.”

Wells’s intention to stay for the season will serve as a boost for Huddersfield ahead of tomorrow’s Yorkshire derby away to Leeds United.

The league leaders are two points ahead of second-place Fulham, the only other unbeaten team in the Championship.

Other Bermudians in action this weekend are Reggie Lambe whose mid-table Carlisle United side are at home to seventh-place Leyton Orient in League Two.

Lambe has been in fine form since joining Carlisle from league rivals Mansfield Town, scoring three goals this season.

Meanwhile, Rai Simmons’s Chesterfield, who are thirteenth in the League One table, are away to eighteenth-place Oldham Athletic.
