Nahki Wells, the Huddersfield Town striker, hopes his winner against Rotherham United in the Sky Bet Championship ignites a run of scoring form.

Wells’s strike at home to struggling Rotherham on Tuesday helped extend Huddersfield’s unblemished home record and sent them back to the top of the table. It also ended his goal drought stretching back to August 13 when Wells struck in Huddersfield’s 2-1 victory away to promotion favourites Newcastle United.

“It’s good to get back on the scoresheet to justify my performance as I’ve been playing well,” Wells told The Royal Gazette. “Of course it’s always a great feeling when you score the winner, so I’m happy to be back to where I need to be and where I deserve to be.

“I think it’s time to put in a good run of performances and goals, and start to get the hunger back of scoring three, four games in a row.

“Hopefully it’s the start of something good and can only help keep us in first place for as long as possible.

“It’s nice to get 90 minutes and I’d like to think that I’m back to my best and back to where I need to be.”

Huddersfield have won seven of their opening ten games and lead second-place Norwich City by two points.

“We have got off to a great start, better than what anyone could have imagined,” Wells said. “But it’s not really too surprising to us considering we always backed ourselves and believe we go about football the right way. We have been able to make our home a fortress, where we have won five out of five. We’ve had a few tough away fixtures, where we have come up slightly short but that’s football.

“If we can keep ticking away each game the percentages will continue to turn in our favour.

“We have had a great start considering we have been away to four of the [promotion] contenders and been able to take some points.”

Wells and his team-mates are away to Ipswich Town tomorrow. “We go into the weekend against a resilient, tough Ipswich side that’s a bit inconsistent,” Wells said. “Hopefully we can go out there and put in a great performance and get the points.”

Tomorrow’s fixture is the last before the international break after which Huddersfield host Sheffield Wednesday on October 16 in a Yorkshire derby to be televised on Sky Sports.

“Norwich slipped up [against Newcastle on Wednesday] which kept us in the lead,” he said.
