Proud Trott named in England Under-19 squad

International call up: Trott is part of a squad that will face Croatia and Bulgaria this month

Just when you thought that Nathan Trott’s year couldn’t get any better, it just did.

Eight months after signing a two-year deal with West Ham United, of the Premier League, the former BAA and Bermuda Under-17 goalkeeper has earned a first call up for England Under-19 duty.

Trott is one of three new players included in a 20-man squad to face Croatia and Bulgaria under-19s in two international friendlies this month.

Also added to the squad, who faced Holland and Belgium in September, ahead of the team’s European Championship qualifying games in November were Ryan Sessegnon, the Fulham defender, and Marcus Edwards, the Tottenham Hotspur, striker.

“Proud to get my first England u19 call up,” Trott tweeted yesterday. “Proud moment for me and my family.”

The player’s father, Dwayne Trott, the former St George’s Colts and Devonshire Colts goalkeeper, added: “He wanted to be a keeper almost three years and has been playing for West Ham since January 2016 and now selected to play for England eight months later.

“I am so proud of his accomplishment. Proud as a peacock and looking for further great things from him.”

Trott first caught the eye of the West Ham coaching staff during trials in the summer of 2015, which led to him putting pen to a deal keeping him at the club until June 2018.

He made his debut for West Ham in April against Reading in the Under-18 Premier League group one play-off and a month later impressed between the posts at the annual ICGT Tournament in Amsterdam and Hong Kong Sevens tournament to quickly establish himself among the pecking order.

“We’ve got seven goalkeepers here, obviously at different age groups, but he is definitely up there as one of the best, without a doubt,” Mark Phillips, the West Ham Under-18 coach, said.

Trott’s previous experience playing in every position outfield has helped him.

“In this day and age to be a good goalkeeper you have to have good feet, and luckily for us Nathan is a good footballer who’s turned into a goalkeeper, which is a really good asset for us,” Phillips added.

“He’s got a really good touch and can hit people with passes. If you’re trying to play from the back Nathan is a handy goalkeeper to have.”

Trott is one of three goalkeepers selected by Keith Downing, the England Under-19 coach, with Will Mannion, of Hull City, and Aaron Ramsdale, of Sheffield United, the others.

The games against Croatia in Zagreb on October 7, and Bulgaria on October 10, come ahead of England’s qualifying games in Wales next month.

“We had two really stern tests last month against Netherlands and Belgium, who both have some very good players,” Downing said.

“The games gave me an indication of where the players were in terms of their levels and the standards, and it was a good opportunity to have a look at the squad of 22 that we used against two tough nations, and we got a lot out of the week.

“We’re trying to get them focused for the Euro Qualifiers in Wales in November, so these lead up games are to get them working together and also to plan some kind of structure for those three difficult qualifiers against Wales, Greece and Luxembourg.

“I can only pick an 18-man squad for the Euro games next month, so there’s still opportunity for everyone to impress against two different kinds of opposition.”
