Difficult starts for Rangers and Parish

Donovan Thompson scored on his debut

Southampton Rangers and Hamilton Parish, the two teams relegated from the Premier Division last season, suffered defeats during yesterday’s opening round of the 2016-17 First Division campaign.

Rangers squandered the lead in a 3-1 home defeat against Young Men’s Social Club, while Parish lost by the same scoreline away to X-Roads at Garrison Field where Jamin Furbert, Tymon Daniels and Rico Beek scored for the home team.

All of the goals came in the second half, with Furbert opening the scoring in the 54th minute before Daniels doubled the lead two minutes later.

Tareek Webb pulled a goal back for Parish in the 67th minute, before Beek made certain of the win for X-Roads with their third in the 80th minute.

At Southampton Oval, Kyle Phillips put Rangers ahead in the ninth minute after a defence-splitting pass from midfield.

Robert Rawlins equalised for Social Club in the 34th minute to make it 1-1 at the break.

Corey Burgess gave Social Club the lead for the first time in the 48th minute and Clay Darrell made it 3-1 with a brilliant solo effort in the 81st minute, beating three defenders.

Two other promotion hopefuls, St David’s and BAA, produced the goals at Lord’s where St David’s came out 4-3 winners, with James Pace Jr and Kunti Fox both scoring twice for the home team.

Morrico Iris, Marcus Brangman and Tyrrell Burgess were the BAA scorers.

Wolves, another team with promotion aspirations this season, left the East End with all three points after a 2-1 win over St George’s at Wellington Oval. Lamelle Paynter opened the scoring for Wolves in the first half before Donovan Thompson, a summer transfer from Hamilton Parish, equalised on his debut for St George’s early in the second half.

Vince Minors marked his returned to Wolves after stints at Flanagan’s Onions and Devonshire Cougars, by scoring their winner with about 20 minutes to go.

In the other match Paget Lions beat Ireland Rangers 3-1 at Malabar Field.
