Wilson disappointed in Simons

Staying put: Simons returned to the Chesterfield fold at the weekend

Rai Simons incurred the disappointment of Danny Wilson, the Chesterfield manager, after refusing a loan move to Vanarama National League side York City last week.

Simons made his first appearance for Chesterfield since August 30 as a 82nd-minute substitute in their 3-0 defeat at home to Scunthorpe United at the weekend — just days after turning down the loan deal.

The 20-year-old, who has returned from a spell on the sidelines through injury, has found himself out of favour this season, making just three league and two cup appearances.

Wilson said he was keen for Simons to gain to some first-team football at York, who are nineteenth in the table, and was frustrated by Simons’s unwillingness to make the temporary switch.

It is understood the Bermuda striker is keen to wait until the January transfer window and see what is available to him.

“There were plans to send him but he refused to go,” Wilson told The Derbyshire Times. “York City wanted to take him but he wanted to see what happens in January.

“When you’ve got opportunities to go and play National League level, it’s important. That would have been as good an education as anything and a big help to throw down a marker to me for the first team.

“He didn’t want to go and that’s disappointing from my point of view.”

Although Wilson’s attacking options are limited with Connor Wilkinson out for about three months, Kristian Dennis struggling with a calf injury and a question mark over the fitness of Ched Evans, he would have been happy to let Simons go.

“He needs to go out and play games and I would let him go,” Wilson added. “Rai has not played, he’s had a hamstring injury, he’s played something like one game in ten weeks and that’s not enough.”

Simons has started only six games for Chesterfield since leaving Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Ilkeston Town in April 2015. He scored five goals in 22 appearances last season.

Chesterfield, who are 23rd in the table, are away to Charlton Athletic this weekend.
