Bermuda pair chase dreams at Stafford

Roger Lee and Jacquil Hill are both hoping to make their mark at English non-League side Stafford Rangers.

Lee, the Bermuda defender, has been at the Evo-Stik Premier Division side since the start of last month, making his debut in a 3-1 win away to Bilton Town Community in the first round of the Walsall Senior Cup.

He has since made one appearance, a 3-1 defeat at home to Newcastle Town in the first round of the Integro League Cup, as well featuring as an unused substitute on five occasions.

The 25-year-old, who has previously had spells at Rugby Town, Weston-super-Mare and Gloucester City, recommended Hill to Rangers when it emerged they were on the lookout for a goalkeeper.

Hill, formerly of Ilkeston, has made one start, against Newcastle Town, and one substitute appearance for the West Midlands club.

The pair are now sharing an apartment in Nottingham funded by Paul Scope, the former Bermuda assistant coach, who has been helping link Bermudian players with English clubs for a number of years.

“Roger has been trying to find his best level and has been very resilient,” said Scope, who forged the Bermuda-Ilkeston connection in 2013.

“He has tried a lot of clubs and doesn’t hesitate to try something else.

“His thinking is, ‘I want to play at the best possible level I can in England’, and he realises he may have to drop down a little to bounce up. He wants to get regular games.”

Hill played several first-team games for Ilkeston — who also play in the Evo-Stik Premier Division — last season before losing his place when they signed Ross Durrant on loan from Sky Bet Championship side Nottingham Forest.

“I’ve been encouraging these guys and saying, ‘Look, if you’re somewhere and not getting a game then it’s pointless,” Scope added.

“You need to be somewhere where you’re playing regularly even if it’s a drop down from where you think you can end up.

“Nahki Wells is the perfect example of that. It’s a tough competition in the UK.

“You need to be getting regular games and then people will respect you and help take you to a higher level.”

Stafford Rangers are seventeenth in the Evo-Stik Premier Division, while Ilkeston are in the relegation zone in 21st but have played fewer matches than the teams around them.
