Back in action: in-form Simmons has shaken off a recent groin injury (Photograph by Lawrence Trott)

Devarr Boyles is counting on his former team, Dandy Town, to get a good result against unbeaten leaders PHC and help tighten the Premier Division title race going into the league break.

Boyles, a former Town player and coach, watched as his team, North Village, snatched a dramatic last-minute equaliser to prevent the Zebras from extending their lead. A loss would have left Village six points out of first place.

“Before we came to the match the goal was to get a result, a result being a point or a win,” Boyles said of the 2-2 draw in the top-of-the-table clash last weekend. “Anything else would have made it difficult, meaning — if we want to be champions at the end of the season — it would have left us with a lot of ground to catch up.

“Now we’re still within touching distance. Last year the club finished really good under [coach] Richard Todd, fourth, which is something to build on.”

Certainly, Dandy Town will be inspired after last weekend’s 5-1 win over Flanagan’s Onions gave them their first win in the league and lifted them off the bottom on goal difference. Captain Angelo Simmons, who was doubtful for that match after limping off with a groin injury in a loss to Devonshire Colts, led from the front with four goals as the league champions finally gave their fans something to smile about.

Village are hoping to stay in contention with maximum points at home to Somerset Eagles, while Devonshire Colts are hoping to have solved some of their defensive frailties when they take on Flanagan’s Onions in a match that has been switched to Goose Gosling Field. Colts conceded eight goals in their last two games, a 6-4 win over Town and a 4-3 loss to Somerset Trojans.

The Trojans host in-form Devonshire Cougars in a mid-table clash at Somerset, while Robin Hood take on Boulevard at Goose Gosling Field on Monday night (9.00).

The Cougars have been one of the most consistent teams in the last month, winning the Dudley Eve Trophy and carrying that momentum back into the league where they have now picked up five wins in eight outings to climb to fourth.

In the First Division tomorrow, bottom team Ireland Rangers host leaders Young Men’s Social Club while X-Roads, second, meet Paget at Garrison Field. St George’s host BAA at Wellington Oval with St David’s at home to Wolves and Southampton Rangers taking on Southampton Rangers at Southampton Oval.
