First Division duo St George’s Colts and X-Roads claimed the scalps of Premier rivals Boulevard and Devonshire Colts in the first round of the FA Cup in emphatic fashion yesterday.

St George’s thumped Boulevard 6-2 at Police Field while their East End neighbours beat Devonshire Colts 4-2 at Garrison Field from where Colts defender Quinton Jones was taken to hospital with a suspected broken leg.

Striker Donavan Thompson led the charge for St George’s with four goals.

“It’s a good feeling to get a Premier Division scalp,” Kyle Tannock, the St George’s coach, said. “Even without a couple of players I felt we handled ourselves very well. We went out there with nothing to lose and did the simple things and scored some good goals.

“I just wanted them to go out there and enjoy it with nothing to lose and try and implement the things that they have been taught throughout the season.

“There were certain things we have worked on in training, and I am just happy to see them execute them.”

Devonshire Colts, five-time Cup winners, suffered a double blow when they also lost defender Jones early in the second half as the match was held up for almost half an hour as Jones was taken to hospital by ambulance.

X-Roads came from a goal down after just seven minutes to take a 3-2 lead at the half on goals from Rico Beek, Paul Simons and Tenecio Lowe. Colts scored through Teniko Eve and Kyle Jones before a Simons penalty settled the match.

“I’m very happy with the team’s performance and today’s victory has been a result of humility and hard work,” said a delighted Farid El Karfa, the X-Roads coach.

The First Division side were certainly not intimidated by their opponents.

“We are pushing for promotion and this was a good test for us against a Premier Division team,” El Karfa said. “I was happy with the team’s fighting spirit.

“I thought Daniel Baker played very well up front today and caused a lot of problems for their defensive line. I have to give him credit, he was brilliant.”
