Donovan Thompson demonstrated why he is regarded as one of the island’s top strikers after bagging a hat-trick to inspire First Division St George’s Colts to an emphatic 6-2 upset over top-flight opponents Boulevard at Police Field yesterday.

Thompson, who rejoined St George’s after a stint with Hamilton Parish, led the visiting side’s onslaught with a clinical display of marksmanship worth every penny of the admission fee.

The striker took only seven minutes to break the deadlock with a low drive from inside the box to earn his team a 1-0 advantage at the half.

Whatever advice Kyle Tannock, the St George’s coach, uttered to his players during the interval did not take long to sink in as Allan Douglas Jr doubled the visiting side’s lead in the 50th minute with an audacious strike from distance.

Spotting the goalkeeper off his line, the St George’s midfielder unleashed a crisp drive from all of 35 yards that drifted into the roof of the net.

Boulevard finally got a foothold in the match in the 56th minute when midfielder Jahzardae Samuels fired past St George’s goalkeeper Charles Marshall to slice the deficit in half.

However, the home team’s joy was short-lived as forward Jahron Dickinson restored the visiting side’s two-goal advantage a minute later with a neat finish.

Kyle Denbrook, the St George’s captain, started the move with a long pass from midfield to Dickinson who then exchanged short passes on the edge of the box with Thompson before burying his effort.

Thompson grabbed his second in the 58th minute to make it 4-1 after latching onto Macai Simmons’s defence-splitting pass from midfield and then completed his hat-trick in the 80th minute after converting a breakaway.

Boulevard pulled another goal back in the final minute when St George’s defender Philip Anderson scored an own goal after a mix up with goalkeeper Marshall before Thompson scored his fourth with a powerful header from Jordan Darrell’s cross in stoppage time to complete the rout.

“It’s a good feeling to get a Premier Division scalp,” Tannock said.

“Even without a couple of players I felt we handled ourselves very well.

“We went out there today with nothing to lose and did the simple things and scored some good goals.”
