Simons on target for reserves

Finding the net: Rai Simons

Rai Simons scored in a losing cause as Chesterfield bowed out of the Derbyshire Senior Cup on Tuesday night after losing 4-2 away to non-League Matlock Town in the quarter-finals.

Chesterfield included five first-team players in their team, including Simons and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, the former Wolverhampton Wanderers forward, who both found the net for the visiting side.

Matlock took the lead in the first half through Marcus Dinanga, a loan player from Sky Bet Championship side Burton Albion, before Simons equalised, scoring with a low shot after running at the Matlock defence.

However Matlock Town regained the lead in the 37th minute through a Marc Newsham header.

Further goals in the second half by Ted Cribley and Anthony Dwyer sealed the win for Matlock before Ebanks-Blake made it 4-2 with his late strike.

Chesterfield appointed Gary Caldwell, the former Scotland and Celtic defender, as manager on Tuesday, replacing Danny Wilson who was fired two weeks ago after a string of bad results left Chesterfield in the relegation zone in League One.

Caldwell, a former Wigan Athletic manager, will take charge of the team for their home match with AFC Wimbledon on Saturday.

n Kacy Milan Butterfield, the Bermuda Under-20 captain, helped Walsall reach the semi-finals of the Walsall Senior Cup after a 2-1 win over Romulus of the Northern Premier First Division.

John Ward, the Walsall professional development coach, said midfielder Butterfield was among a crop of good youngsters coming through at the Banks’s Stadium.

“Liam [Kinsella] and Jordon [Sangha] are both leaders,” Ward said.

“Jordon captained us again, even though Kory Roberts was back in the team following his spell with the First Team and led by example.

“Liam is a fantastic personality to have in the group, he’s a leader and the others look up to them and respond.

“There’s a really good work ethic anyway but those two set the stall out for the rest and really set the tone.

“Add Milan Butterfield into the mix now and the three of them are developing an exciting understanding in the middle of the park.”
