Wells in thick of it again for Huddersfield

Wells scored one and set up the other in Huddersfield’s 2-1 win over QPR

Nahki Wells scored one goal and had an assist for the other in Huddersfield Town’s 2-1 victory away to Queens Park Rangers in the Sky Bet Championship on Saturday.

The Bermuda striker set up the visitors’ first goal at Loftus Road, pulling the ball back for Izzy Brown to volley the Terriers ahead in the 26th minute.

Wells then went from provider to scorer ten minutes later when he drove in Huddersfield’s second and his ninth of the season to earn his team a 2-0 cushion at the half.

The home team rallied in the second half, Luke Freeman pouncing right on the hour mark after Huddersfield failed to clear their lines to shave the deficit in half and signal game on.

Rangers pressed but were unable find a way past Danny Ward, the Huddersfield goalkeeper, who made a string of brilliant saves down the stretch to protect his team’s narrow lead.

“Danny Ward was by miles the best player on the pitch, which I think says everything,” David Wagner, the Huddersfield manager, said.

“We were on our best in terms of the fighting and working attitude and how we tried to defend as a group, but I have to be honest and say I think we were lucky to get this win. QPR were very good, very aggressive and created moments over the wings

“We got three lucky points, but three points are three points and we are so happy to have got them.

“We should not forget also that we scored two wonderful goals and created other opportunities as well.

“In the second half we didn’t keep the ball as well and were never able to stop their pressure.

“But QPR deserved more than they got.

“Sometimes you have to play such games.

“It is easy to win when you are on your best in terms of handling the ball, not so easy when you aren’t.”

Terriers midfielder Jonathan Hogg went off with a groin injury while centre back Chris Schindler suffered a cut head in the victory.

Huddersfield’s 18th league win of the season pushed them into third in Sky Bet Championship, six points adrift of the second and final automatic promotion spot and seven shy of leaders Newcastle United.

Rai Simons and Reggie Lambe were unused substitutes on Saturday.

Simons’s Chesterfield lost 3-1 away to Northampton Town in League One while Lambe’s Carlisle United were soundly beaten 4-1 at home by Blackpool in League Two.
