Nahki Wells came off the bench as Huddersfield Town beat bottom side Rotherham United to close the gap at the top of the Sky Bet Championship table yesterday.

Huddersfield won the Yorkshire derby 3-2 with a dramatic winner three minutes into stoppage time as Rotherham, one of Shaun Goater’s former teams, lost their 23rd match of the season.

Wells, who scored Huddersfield’s winner against Queens Park Rangers on Saturday, watched from the bench as Rotherham took the lead in the eleventh minute through Semi Ajayi. Joe Lolly equalised eight minutes later.

The match was deadlocked at 1-1 when Wells came off the bench in the 62nd minute as Huddersfield made a double substitution. However, it was Rotherham who scored against in the 71st minute when Tom Adeyemi scored to make it 2-1. Huddersfield were back level just four minutes later when Elias Kachunga netted.

Tommy Smith scored the Huddersfield winner in stoppage time with a shot from 20 yards into the bottom corner to move them two points closer to Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove Albion, who both drew. Newcastle scored an 81st minute equaliser in their 2-2 draw away to Norwich City while Brighton drew 1-1 at home to Ipswich. Newcastle have 66 points, Brighton 65 and Huddersfield 61.

Meanwhile, Rai Simons came on in the 64th minute as Chesterfield drew 1-1 away to Gillingham in League One where the equaliser for the visitors came four minutes into stoppage time. Chesterfield are second from bottom.

Reggie Lambe returned to the Carlisle United starting lineup after being an unused substitute in the 4-1 home loss to Blackpool on Saturday, as they beat League Two leaders Doncaster Rovers 2-1. Carlisle, in third, closed the gap on second placed Plymouth Argyle, who also lost.
