Lambe ready to play part in promotion push

Repeat offender: Lambe scores against Portsmouth on the opening day — which he aims to do again on Saturday

Reggie Lambe is hopeful that he can play a big part in Carlisle United’s promotion push after his first goal in almost three months at the weekend earned him a spot in the EFL’s Team of the Week.

The Bermuda midfielder scored and had an assist in Carlisle’s 2-1 win away to Wycombe Wanderers in Sky Bet League Two on Saturday that moved the third-placed Cumbrians to within six points of leaders Doncaster Rovers and three points behind second-placed Plymouth Argyle, who both drew.

The result also solidified their hold on the final automatic promotion place, as they are five points ahead of fourth-placed Luton Town and a further point ahead of Portsmouth, with both those clubs also drawing at the weekend.

And Lambe, making only his second start since playing in Bermuda’s 4-2 defeat by Canada at the National Stadium on January 22nd, is desperate to keep his place in Keith Curle’s side with glory a realistic proposition.

“I love it here and I’m enjoying my football,” the 26-year-old told Carlisle’s official website. “I haven’t been playing lately but I’m pleased to be back in the team now and I’m just trying to keep my spot while we have a couple of injuries. We want to try and make sure we keep getting the wins and stay in that third spot as we look up to catch the other two teams.”

Lambe explained how he took a gamble and won in scoring Carlisle’s winner, when he latched on to Jamie Proctor’s flick-on to net his sixth goal of the season.

“The gaffer was speaking to me before the game and he said we were going to try and match them,” he said. “He told me to make sure I gambled and that I got in behind the defence if the opportunity was there, so that’s what I did. Thankfully I got on the end of it and scored.

“We were maybe a bit shocked by how much they did lump it forward but after they’d scored we settled into the game and we stuck to our game plan. That’s what we had to do to make sure we came away with the victory.”

Lambe is now confident his side can push on, with the Wycombe victory coming just four days after beating pacesetters Doncaster 2-1 at Brunton Park.

“We’ve sent a message to the rest of the teams around us now,” Lambe said. “Even after we beat Doncaster on Tuesday, that was a statement. To come here and get the victory against another top side in the league is another good step for us. We’ve just got to push on now and let everyone know how hard we’re trying to get promoted.”

Carlisle have another big game coming up, with promotion rivals Portsmouth making the long trip north to Cumbria on Saturday.

“The Portsmouth game is another good one to look forward to. We played them in the first game of the season and did well [a 1-1 draw in which Lambe scored]. I think we just need to do what we do at home. I don’t think they’ll be able to match us if we play like we have in the last two games.”
