Lightbourne urges Hood to forget cup setback

Robin Hood aim to put their disappointing defeat by PHC Zebras in the FA Cup semi-final behind them as they aim to wrap up a first Premier Division title.

Hood’s FA Cup defence came to an end with a 3-0 loss to Zebras on Wednesday night, but they can still win the league with a game to spare depending on the results of next week’s rescheduled matches at Goose Gosling Field.

PHC play North Village on Wednesday night, with Hood taking on struggling Somerset Eagles the following night. Wins for Village and Hood would see Kyle Lightbourne’s side clinch the title.

“Nobody remembers the semi-finals after this, but if we win our next two league games everybody will remember that,” Lightbourne said. “We’ll regroup and play with the intensity that we know we can. We just weren’t good enough on the ball [on Wednesday], but we got better in the second half. I thought the third goal that Cecoy [Robinson] scored really killed us; 3-0 was a big mountain to climb.”

The absence of some players depleted Hood, leaving them with just three substitutes. “I can’t be too critical of the players because they have given me a lot all season,” Lightbourne said. “Even though it was a poor performance from us, we just have to take it and move on. That’s what I’m about to tell the players. We have to take baby steps, the league is the only thing we can play for now.

“As you can see our numbers were down, with two players overseas and players injured.”

Scott Morton, the PHC coach, praised his team’s performance against the league leaders, with Robinson scoring a hat-trick as they kept alive their own hopes of the league and FA Cup double.

“Cecoy worked his tail off, but everybody did, from my goalkeeper [Quinaceo Hunt] all the way through,” Morton said. “There was 100 per cent commitment and no lapses in concentration. Now the focus is on the next match.”

One match is scheduled for Sunday, with Devonshire Cougars at home to Boulevard at 5pm because of the Kappa Classic at the North Field.

Cougars, who are fourth, have secured a spot in next season’s Dudley Eve Trophy, which they won this season by beating PHC in the final. Boulevard are sixth and Dandy Town Hornets seventh, with just a point separating them with two matches remaining.

Town will play relegation-threatened Flanagan’s Onions on Tuesday night, with Onions desperate for a win as they battle Eagles to avoid the second relegation spot. Onions are eighth on 13 points, Eagles a point behind in ninth, with bottom side Devonshire Colts already down.
