Kachunga signs full-time deal with Huddersfield

Kachunga has moved to Huddersfield for a reported £1.1 million

While Nahki Wells mulls a new contract at Huddersfield Town, his strike partner Elias Kachunga made his loan move to the Sky Bet Championship club permanent this week.

Kachunga, the club’s leading goal scorer this season with ten goals since joining Huddersfield on loan from Ingolstadt, will make his move to John Smith’s Stadium permanent on July 1. The club activated the automatic buy option on the initial loan agreement for the 24-year-old player whose goals have helped transform Huddersfield into promotion contenders this season.

The deal is reported to be worth £1.1 million with the player signing a contract that will expire in the summer of 2020. Kachunga has played more minutes in the Championship this season than any other player, 37 appearances. His form this season also saw him earn his first international call up to the Democratic Republic of Congo’s squad for their friendly against Kenya.

“I said in the summer that this move was perfect for the club and the player, as the loan gave everyone the chance to see how Elias would adapt to English football,” manager David Wagner said. “I think it’s now correct to say he has adapted well! His style of play suits the English style perfectly.

“He has shown that he has learnt from some early experiences in his career to become a better player.”

Wagner said he felt the player had definitely benefited from a switch from striker to a position on the right side of midfield.

“It’s more remarkable that he came to us as a competitor at number nine, but has made the place on the right of midfield his own through his performances,” the manager said.

“I know he is a very popular man with the players and fans, so completing this move is a great day for the club. The most exciting thing is that I believe, at 24 years old, there is still more to come from Elias.”

Wells, the club’s top scorer last season with 15 goals, has netted nine goals in 35 league appearances this season. He has another year on his contract and has said he will consider signing a new contract in the summer.
