Hood have hands on the title

Bagged a brace: Hood forward Peskett

Robin Hood 3 Somerset Eagles 0

Robin Hood all but clinched a maiden Premier Division title after easily brushing aside relegation-threatened Somerset Eagles in a lopsided contest at Goose Gosling Field last night.

Winger Lejuan Simmons opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time before fellow forward Nathan Peskett added a brace in the second half to kill the game off and put on the verge of the title.

Hood’s victory eliminated third placed North Village from the title race.

PHC Zebras, in the second place, are the only team that could mathematically catch Hood during the final round of league fixtures on Sunday.

However, Hood boast a vastly superior goal difference than PHC, who must win their final match against Dandy Town by at least 14 clear goals and hope Boulevard beat the leaders.

“Mathematically it’s not over, but I think we did our job tonight,” said an elated Hood coach Kyle Lightbourne.

“Our main thing was to win and all we have to do now is match PHC’s result and we are officially champions.

“Our goal difference was plus ten going into the match and now it’s up to 13 so we have to lose by a lot [against Boulevard] and they [PHC] have to win by a lot and technically I don’t think that’s going to happen.

“We haven’t played well over the last two games. But as you saw tonight once we got the second goal we started popping the ball around a little bit more and the guys were at ease.

“And that’s understandable because it’s a first time for some of these guys winning the league and I’m pleased because I think this is a massive achievement for Robin Hood Football Club.

“We went undefeated at home this season, scored the most goals and also conceded the least.

“I actually said to the guys before the game that if we win the title it is our defence has done it for us.”

Simmons made the breakthrough moments before the half with an angled drive inside the box.

Peskett then struck twice inside of three minutes to make the points safe.

The towering forward turned in Donte Brangman’s corner and then volleyed home a second from close range after Eagles failed to clear their lines.

Eagles only mustered one shot on goal, Marcus Iris-Simmons shooting tamely into the arms of Hood goalkeeper Jason Simons in the 88th minute.

Only one point separates Eagles in ninth from Flanagan’s Onion, a position above, while Devonshire Colts are already relegated.
